Why you need the Type3MalfunctionRound™

The Type3MalfunctionRound™ from LiveFire Tactical Training LLC is a nylon dummy round that creates a “secondary malfunction” instead of a “primary malfunction” like a typical dummy round would cause.

Not only does the Type3MalfunctionRound™ cause a double feed but it causes it to occur in a real-time way that an actual double feed would occur and not in a slow, methodical way of setting it up on the gun for training.

The Type3MalfunctionRound from LiveFire Tactical Training LLC in use at Willapa Firearms Training

A problem with setting up a type 3 malfunction in training is that the shooter knows the malfunction is going to occur and starts with a misfeed on the gun.  Setting this situation up can be time consuming and even dangerous with new shooters on the line in a group setting for live fire.

The Type3MalfunctionRound™ solves all these problems with its patented design that loads in the magazine, just like a standard dummy round would.  When the shooter encounters the type 3 malfunction because of the Type3MalfunctionRound™ they now must recognize the error and fix it.

How do you fix a type 3 malfunction on a pistol?

When teaching the type 3 malfunction for a pistol, we teach the shooter to LOOK at the gun (seeing what the malfunction is with the gun up in the work space), LOCK the slide to the rear, STRIP the magazine (and retain it if it limited ammo is on you), RACK the slide 2 to 3 times vigorously if you do not see the stoppage clear out immediately, LOAD the magazine (preferably a new one if you have more), RACK the slide again, and ACCESS the situation to decide if more rounds down range are needed or not.

The Type3MalfunctionRound is a nylon dummy round which simulates the Type 3 Malfunction, EXACTLY as you would experience it in reality under live fire training conditions.

A type 3 malfunction clearance can be time consuming if you aren’t practiced to a level of unconscious competency!

What I found the most helpful for me while training with the Type3MalfunctionRound™ was to load several magazines up with live ammunition, standard dummy rounds, & the Type3MalfunctionRound™ and purposely not keep track of what or how I loaded each magazine.

Using a timer to create a need for urgency, I drew and engaged my Mojo Riot Target with a t-shirt glued to it and had it mounted on my Hatpoint Target Stand.  It was a winning combination that worked me through multiple skills in a short amount of time and I was able to see where my failure points were.

The Type3MalfunctionRound™ is a minimal investment, you get five of the training rounds for $20.00.  Considering the amount of times you can use these rounds and the time you save getting in multiple repetitions, they are a money saver. If you’re ready to try out the Type3MalfunctionRound get them HERE. They are avaiilable for 9mm, .40 S&W, .380, and .45.
