Glassing and Spotting: Styrka Tips for Using Your Binoculars and Spotting Scopes

The best, most dedicated hunters spend a good deal of time scouting for game. When it comes to actually seeing that game, nothing beats the combination of a high-quality Styrka binocular matched with a great Styrka spotting scope.
Consider some of these tips to get the most out of your Styrka combo!

Binoculars First Always start with your binoculars, as their wider field of view gives you a much better chance of seeing something. Focus on edges, as intree-lines, around rock formations, fences and the gaps between trees, rocks and brush. Game animals are wary and prefer to stay away from wide open areas.

Look for Parts and Pieces Don’t expect to see that huge old mule deer sky-lined atop a hill. You’re much more likely to see his antlers just above some sage brush or the tan of his coat mixed in with some greenery. Look for color variations and out-of-place dark spots. Any movement deserves a second look, too!

The Low Down While glassing, follow the contours of the land around you. Animals will be on the ground level, after all, and it’s easy to point your binoculars too high. Pay attention to small dips and creases where animals like to hide, too.
Saw something through your Styrka binoculars that needs a closer look? Switch over to your spotting scope, which should already be set up.

Spotting for Success Always start off your spotting scope viewing at a lower magnification. This creates a wider field of view for better scanning. Movement, color variations, and out-of-place lumps or bumps justify higher magnification for an up close look.
Look for Lines You won’t find many horizontal or vertical lines in nature. So, when your spotting scope comes across a line, zoom in. Sure, that line could be a tree limb or a strand of barbed wire. But it could also be the top of a deer’s back.
Sunny Days Bright sun reflecting off a spotting scope’s lenses can distort images. If the sun’s crossing the front of your spotting scope, slide out the integrated sunshade that comes standard on both Styrka S7 Spotting scopes. If the sun’s behind you, move into shade. Or, block that bright sun with a large, floppy hat or a towel draped over your head, shoulders and the eye-piece end of your S7 Spotting Scope.

Take a Break Extended glassing can create eye strain. Looking at the same landscape again and again will cause your eyes to begin skipping over segments, too. The solution’s easy enough. Put down the optic, look away for a minute, and then close your eyes and count to 30. Now, you can return to your Styrka optic with a “fresh” set of eyes.
Styrka optics are designed and made with the hunter in mind–and that means they are ready for the field, in the United States and across the world!
